‘Absolutely no evidence:’ Police, FBI affidavit debunk salacious conspiracy about Pelosi attack pushed by conservatives

Share The News

By Casey Tolan, Curt Devine, Scott Bronstein and Daniel A. Medina, CNN

Prominent figures on social media, including some of the loudest voices on the political right, are pushing a salacious and false conspiracy theory about the attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, in an apparent attempt to shift the narrative about the assault.

The claim that big names like Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Jr., and Dinesh D’Souza have promoted to millions of their followers: Paul Pelosi and the man who attacked him were gay lovers who had gotten into a fight.

The spurious theory traces back to an incorrect early news report and a handful of pieces of evidence that its proponents have spun wildly out of context. It runs contrary to the explanation police and federal law enforcement have outlined — that the suspect in the attack, David DePape, broke into Pelosi’s house and attacked him.

“There is absolutely no evidence that Mr. Pelosi knew this man,” San Francisco Police Chief William Scott told CNN in an interview. “As a matter of fact, the evidence indicates the exact opposite.”

But the explosion of social media posts discussing the theory shows how quickly conspiracies can spread, and how eagerly some political actors use falsehoods to push their agendas — even as violent threats against lawmakers have multiplied in recent years.

A conspiracy linked to Nancy Pelosi, who has long been a lightning rod for conservatives and played a starring role in GOP attack ads, was an especially appealing target for right-wing conspiracists, according to Cynthia Miller-Idriss, an American University professor who studies polarization and extremism.

“We have a population that is unable to discern what is true and what’s not, and this spreading of misinformation from credible sources undermines that,” Miller-Idriss said. “People are willing to accept conspiracy theories when they reinforce the narrative they already hold in their head.”

According to police and an FBI affidavit included in the federal criminal complaint, DePape broke into a glass door in Pelosi’s San Francisco home early Friday morning, and then went to the bedroom to confront Pelosi, saying he wanted to talk to his wife. Pelosi managed to call 911, and officers arriving on the scene witnessed DePape hit him with a hammer.

Those pushing the “gay lover” theory have pointed to a handful of purported pieces of evidence based on falsehoods and twisted storylines. They say that DePape was in his underwear when police arrived at the scene — but the local TV station that originally reported that has since corrected its story and removed the assertion. Others have suggested that a third person opened the door to Pelosi’s house, but police have debunked that.

Many of the theorists have latched on to a recording of a 911 dispatcher saying that Pelosi referred to DePape as “a friend” and “sounded somewhat confused.”

But Pelosi seemed to be speaking in coded language on the 911 call to make clear he needed help, a law enforcement source previously told CNN. And the complaint notes that Pelosi told officers he had never seen DePape before.

The complaint also included an interview police did with DePape in which he admitted breaking into the house and said he surprised Pelosi. According to the complaint, DePape said that wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage because he viewed her as the “‘leader of the pack’ of lies told by the Democratic Party,” and claimed he was “fighting against tyranny without the option of surrender.”

Scott, the San Francisco chief, called the conspiracies surrounding the attack “pathetic” and “disturbing.”

“We’ve spent a lot of energy just pushing back, really ridiculous conspiracy theories, to make sure people stay focused on our team,” he said. “These things are harmful to society, they’re harmful to the victims involved — it’s really sad that we are here in this place, but we are.”

Baseless theory gains momentum on social media

Despite the lack of evidence, it took less than 24 hours after the attack for the “gay lover” theory to take root in right-wing social media circles.

There have been at least 19,000 tweets mentioning the words “Pelosi” and “gay” since the day of the attack, garnering a total of more than 700,000 likes, according to a CNN analysis — and that doesn’t include tweets referencing the theory without those words, or tweets that have since been deleted.

One of the first widely shared tweets endorsing the theory appears to have come at 11:36 a.m. on Friday, the day of the attack, gaining more than 2,700 retweets.

That evening, Raheem Kassam, a former Breitbart writer and co-host of Steve Bannon’s podcast, tweeted, “They’re still pretending it wasn’t Paul Pelosi’s gay lover,” earning over 1,000 retweets.

Other conservative figures like Donald Trump, Jr., Sebastian Gorka, and Dinesh D’Souza followed suit over the next few days, either explicitly endorsing the theory or referencing it approvingly. Rep. Clay Higgins, a Louisiana GOP congressman who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, tweeted a photo of Nancy Pelosi and referred to DePape as a “male prostitute,” before deleting his tweet.

Musk helped elevate the conspiracy to a much wider audience. On Sunday morning, the billionaire, who just completed his purchase of the social media network, responded to a tweet about the Pelosi attack from Hillary Clinton and wrote “there is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye.” He linked to an article in the Santa Monica Observer, an obscure website, claiming DePape was a male prostitute and Pelosi had been in a drunken dispute with him. The website has previously posted false news, such as a claim during the 2016 election that Clinton had died and been replaced with a body double for a debate.

Musk deleted the tweet around 2 p.m. later that day — but by then, it had already racked up more than 28,000 retweets and 100,000 likes.

Conservative figures gleefully praised Musk for sharing the post. “.@ElonMusk just posted a link that says Paul Pelosi may have been drunk and with a gay prostitute,” tweeted Lavern Spicer, a former GOP congressional candidate. “I have never respected him more than now.” Her message was retweeted more than 11,000 times.

Gene DePape, the alleged attacker’s stepfather, said it was dismaying to see his stepson turned into a character in a conspiracy theory and used as a political talking point. He told CNN he scrolled through his Facebook news feed for hours over the weekend, where he first saw the posts claiming his estranged stepson had been lovers with Pelosi.

“It’s pretty sick,” he said.

David DePape’s own social media and blog postings show that he himself was steeped in conspiracy theories in the months and years before the attack — from musings about QAnon to antisemitic rants to claims of a looming takeover by the global elite.

DePape’s posts on Facebook from last year endorse a litany of right-wing falsehoods. He posted multiple videos produced by My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell falsely alleging that the 2020 election was stolen, linked to websites claiming Covid vaccines were deadly, and shared videos questioning the January 6, 2021attack. CNN reviewed the posts before the social media company took the page down, and several of DePape’s relatives confirmed the page belonged to him.

On other blogs apparently written by DePape, he also posted antisemitic screeds and endorsed the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Some conservatives’ embrace of the “gay lover” theory has muddied the waters of a story that had led to bipartisan condemnation and sympathy for Pelosi — and distracted from discussion of how other right-wing conspiracies could have inspired violence.

Miller-Idriss, the American University professor, said that prominent figures carelessly spreading misinformation can lead to wider impacts on society.

“It’s dangerous because it undermines peoples’ sense of truth, it helps them further divorce from reality,” she said. “It is a situation where they spread it further — and they pass it on.”

Gypsy Taub: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Share The News

gypsy-taub.jpg?quality=65&strip=all&w=78

gypsy taub

Facebook Gypsy Taub

Gypsy Taub is a Russian-born nudity activist and homeless youth director in Berkeley, California.

She is well-known in the San Francisco area and has participated in the “body freedom” protest movement. Her real name is Oxane Taub.

The Daily Beast reported that Taub lives with David Depape, the suspect in the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. There is no indication that she has any involvement in that attack, however.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Taub, Who Was Accused of Stalking a Teen Boy, Once Got Married in the Nude at San Francisco City Hall

Joe Eskenazi, of Mission Local, tweeted, “My sources also name the suspect in this morning’s hammer attack on Paul Pelosi as David DePape, born 1980, of Berkeley. He would appear to be a former Castro nudist protester. Things appear set to be bizarre for a while.”

The Castro mentioned in his tweet refers to the San Francisco neighborhood, not the Cuban dictator.

A 2013 article in the San Francisco Chronicle mentions Depape, although his name is spelled wrong. It describes him as a “hemp jewelry maker.” That article reported that Depape was the best man at the naked wedding of Gypsy Taub. Taub was marrying Jaymz Smith.

The article reported that Taub was planning to wear only a veil to the wedding on the steps of San Francisco City Hall. That article described Taub as “the full front of nude activism in the city.”

“Planning the wedding is stressful, but it’s exciting because I’m a big rebel and I just like to stir s- up,” Taub told the newspaper.

According to Berkeley Side, in 2019, Taub was charged with attempted child abduction, stalking and child abuse — all felonies. Authorities alleged she became fixated on a 14 year old boy, who was once a friend of Taub’s son.

“Taub maintained a connection with the boy and sent him numerous messages and emails to the point where the boy’s mother sought a restraining order against Taub in June. But, according to police, Taub did not stop contacting him — despite the filing of multiple misdemeanor charges in July, September and November,” the site reported.

Police also described “two blog postings of communications that appear to be from” Taub in which she was “professing her love and desire” to be with the teen boy, the site reported.

The Alameda County District Attorney wrote in a press release in 2021:

On Aug. 26, 2021, a jury found defendant Oxane Taub guilty of 20 counts– from felony charges of stalking, dissuading a witness, and attempted child abduction to misdemeanor counts for violating protective orders and child molest.

The defendant, a 50-year-old woman, became fixated on a 14-year-old boy in 2018. Over the course of 14 months, she sent him numerous obsessive emails, created blogs directed at him, used his friends to send him messages and eventually tried to abduct him a few blocks from his school in Berkeley. While the case was pending, Taub also tried to dissuade the victim from testifying.

DDA Lori Mullins prosecuted the trial, with assistance from Victim-Witness Advocate Erica Chavis.

2. Taub Has Three Children

A 2008 article in the Oakland Tribune, accessed via Newspapers.com, reported that David Depape and Gypsy Taub have three children together. However, it’s not clear their biological relationship, if any, as elsewhere Depape is referred to as a father figure.

The article in the Tribune gave more details about the family life of Taub and Depape.

Instead of cooking Thanksgiving dinner in their Berkeley home, Taub and Depape “chose to join 350 others at the Two Star Market for a community meal,” the article stated.

“We like to meet our neighbors,” Taub told the newspaper.

3. Taub Describes Herself as a Homeless Activist

Taub is a fan of Jerry Garcia.

On Facebook, Taub wrote, “I am the founder of Jerry Garcia Family Clinic (also known as Life on the Street Support Services).”

She also describes herself as “host at Mynakedtruth.tv” and “Founder at Jerry Garcia Family Healing Clinic” and writes that she “worked at EntheoRadio: Psychedelics, Shamanism & Conversations on Healing” and “Studied Psychedelics at Dead Tour.”

4. Taub Is From Moscow, Russia

Taub is Russia-born.

According to her Facebook page, Taub “went to Moscow School 45,” lives in Berkeley, California, and is from Moscow, Russia.

Depape is from British Columbia, according to CNN. In a news conference on October 28, 2022, San Francisco police said they encountered Depape inside the Pelosi residence, grappling for a hammer with the House Speaker’s husband. He then attacked Paul Pelosi with it, according to police, severely injuring him. Paul Pelosi is expected to survive; Depape is in custody, but the motive is not clear.

5. Taub Has Written About Being a ‘Body Freedom Activist’

In a 2013 blog post, Taub wrote about being a “body freedom activist. The post reads:

On July 20 body freedom activists had a protest against the nudity ban and a body freedom parade in the Castro. While at the previous protests we were illegally arrested, this time the police department left us alone. I suspect that the power brokers finally realized that everything they do that violates our constitutional rights will be used against them in our federal lawsuit against the City of San Francisco.

The post continues,

The parade was fun. We got a lot of encouraging comments, cheers, honks, handshakes. I can only remember one person flying off the handle about our nudity. It is interesting that every time someone expresses anger at the nudists they always act totally psychotic, in ways that would make you want to call psychiatric emergency. This is another blatant sign of how pathologically psychotic body shames makes people.

David DePape ex-girlfriend has become a hot topic of discussion since David DePape was accused of hammering Paul Pelosi

A preliminary investigation into the past of the man suspected of brutally assaulting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband early on Friday suggested that he held expansive and somewhat incongruous political views.

While the reason behind the assault on 82-year-old Paul Pelosi was still unknown as of Friday night, a picture and some intriguing details of the suspect, 42-year-old David DePape, started to surface.

Apart from other details, information about David DePape’s ex-girlfriend has become a hot topic of discussion all over social media platforms with many people trying to figure out if she has any role in what David DePape had done or not.

It was revealed that David DePape, who used a hammer to strike Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul, shared a home with Oxane “Gypsy” Taub, a local nudist.

Since then, many people are trying to find out more about her. So, here’s what we know about her:

Who Is David DePape’s Ex-Girlfriend?

David DePape had a girlfriend named Oxane “Gypsy” Taub. She was a local nudist.

The DailyMail reports that Taub and DePape married in 2008 and had three kids (one daughter and two sons) together.

She has also protested while partially clothed in front of San Francisco City Hall. She displayed a “Black lives matter” placard in her window and hung an LGBT rainbow flag from a tree with a marijuana leaf on it.

Why Did She Try To Kidnap A Boy?

In 2021, David DePape’s ex-girlfriend Taub was found guilty of abusing children. She also tried to attract a youngster into a covert meeting by sending him emails and SMS. However, it also stated that she allegedly purchased sex toys for Taub’s boys and also attempted to kidnap a 14-year-old boy.

One of Taub’s neighbors, Ryan La Coste, clarified,

Before Gypsy got locked up, there were sex dolls drying on the back of their porch that I’m assuming she bought for her sons. They’re off the wall.

David DePape’s ex-girlfriend was found guilty of the crime because, in the eyes of the authorities, she was “obsessed” with a young boy and once wrote to him that they could date in other states.

The youngster receives a box from Taub with the following note inside:

This is our last chance to help you. Leave your bag and your regular cell phone in the locker.

At that moment, police detained her at the rendezvous location.

EXCLUSIVE: Former partner of accused Paul Pelosi attacker DePape reveals new details about suspect

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — The former partner of the man accused of violently attacking Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband at their San Francisco home on Friday is revealing new details about the suspect.

“Hello this is Gypsy Taub. I am the ex-life partner of David DePape and the mother of his children,” said Oxane Taub, calling from the Californian Institution For Women in Corona, California.

Taub — better known as “Gypsy” — is a well-known nudist activist who spoke with ABC7 in 2013 at a protest in San Francisco.

“We just wanted to test the waters to see how much the police department respected our first amendment rights,” said Taub in 2013. Now she’s revealing a longtime relationship with David DePape.

“He is mentally ill. He has been mentally ill for a long time,” said Taub, who last year was found guilty on 20 counts, including the attempted abduction of a 14-year-old boy near his Berkeley high school.

Taub told ABC7 News that she and DePape met more than 20 years ago. Together they raised their two sons and her daughter until about seven years ago.

She described a time DePape returned home after disappearing for a year.

“He came back in very bad shape. He thought he was Jesus. He was constantly paranoid, thinking people were after him,” Taub said. “And it took a good year or two to get back to, you know, being halfway normal.”

Tara Campbell: “Did he ever show any aggression towards politicians, were his political beliefs extreme in your opinion?”

Taub: “Well when I met him, he was only 20 years old ,and he didn’t have any experience in politics, and he was very much in alignment with my views and I’ve always been very progressive. I absolutely admire Nancy Pelosi.”

She sends the following message to the Pelosis: “I would like to express my deepest apology to Nancy Pelosi and her husband for the terrible tragic thing that happened.”

Pelosi attack suspect David DePape was a psychotic homeless addict estranged from his pedophile lover & their children

Share The News

paul-pelosi-attack-comp.jpg?quality=75&s

Leading politicians blamed the political right for the brutal attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul.

“This is despicable,” said President Biden. He noted that the alleged attacker, David DePape, 42, shouted the same line, “Where’s Nancy?” as the supporters of Donald Trump, who stormed the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. “And what makes us think that one party can talk about stolen elections?” said Biden. “COVID being a hoax? It’s all a bunch of lies.”

California political leaders agreed. “This heinous assault is yet another example of the dangerous consequences of the divisive and hateful rhetoric that is putting lives at risk and undermining our very democracy and democratic institutions,” said California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “This attack,” said San Francisco’s state Sen. Scott Weiner, “is terrifying and the direct result of toxic right-wing rhetoric.”

Journalists, en masse, agreed with their assessment. DePape “appears to have made racist and often rambling posts online,” noted AP, in a report that encapsulated the media narrative, “including some that questioned the results of the 2020 election, defended former President Donald Trump and echoed QAnon conspiracy theories.”

But DePape’s politics have little rhyme or reason. In past years DePape shared a post about Stephen Colbert’s 2006 roast of President George W. Bush at the White House Correspondents dinner; linked to videos of Disney films altered to make it look like the characters were swearing; and claimed, “Jesus is the anti-Christ” — not exactly a litany of right-wing tropes.

And, as I soon discovered, DePape lived with a notorious local nudist in a Berkeley home, complete with a Black Lives Matter sign in the window and an LGBT rainbow flag, emblazoned with a marijuana symbol, hanging from a tree. A closer look reveals the characteristics of a homeless encampment, or what Europeans call “an open drug scene.” In the driveway, there is a broken-down camper van. On the street is a yellow school bus, which neighbors said DePape occasionally stayed in. Both are filled with garbage typical of such structures in homeless encampments. People come and go from the house and the vehicles, neighbors say, in part to partake in the use of a potent psychedelic drug, ibogaine.

Neighbors described DePape as a homeless addict with politics that was, until recently, left-wing, but of secondary importance to his psychotic and paranoid behavior.

“What I know about the family is that they’re very radical activists,” said one of DePape’s neighbors, a woman who only gave her first name, Trish. “They seem very left. They are all about the Black Lives Matter movement. Gay pride. But they’re very detached from reality. They have called the cops on several of the neighbors, including us, claiming that we are plotting against them. It’s really weird to see that they are willing to be so aggressive toward somebody else who is also a lefty.”

Not all of the news media missed DePape’s history of drug use, psychosis, and homelessness. CNN reported that a woman named Laura Hayes, who said she worked with DePape 10 years ago making hemp bracelets, said he had been living in a storage shed. “He talks to angels,” she said, and told her that “there will be a hard time coming.”

Another woman, Linda Schneider, told CNN and Bay Area NBC TV affiliate, KRON4, that she got to know DePape around 2014 and that he was still homeless, living in a storage unit, and using hard drugs. “He [was] likely a mindless follower of something he saw on social media because I don’t think he had the courage to be part of any political or terrorist group,” said Schneider. “His drug use began again and he went off his rocker.”

But much of the rest of the news media, particularly local journalists who could have interviewed DePape’s neighbors, were swept up in the narrative that DePape was more like John Wilkes Booth, the fanatical but sane assassin of Abraham Lincoln, than John Hinkley, Jr., the mentally ill man who shot Ronald Reagan. DePape is much more like one of the hundreds of psychotic homeless people I’ve interviewed in recent years than the fanatical climate ideologues who I’ve been writing about in recent weeks.

Wrapped up in their own obsession with Trump Republicans, most journalists have missed the real story. David DePape is not a microcosm of the political psychosis gripping America in general. Rather, he’s a microcosm of the drug-induced psychosis gripping the West Coast in particular.

Drugs, Paranoia, and Pedophilia

I visited the Berkeley house where DePape had lived with his former lover, Oxane “Gypsy” Taub, 53, a charismatic Russian immigrant 11 years David’s senior. DePape appears to have fallen under the spell of Taub around 2003, when DePape was a quiet, video game-obsessed 21-year-old in Powell River, a town of 14,000 people that is a four-hour drive up the coast of British Columbia from Vancouver.

A Nov. 27, 2008, article in the Oakland Tribune said Taub and DePape were married with three children. But DePape’s stepfather, Gene, told AP yesterday that Taub was his stepson’s girlfriend, not wife; that David and Taub had two, not three, children together; and that David’s third child was with another woman.

Neighbors described DePape as a drug addict with left-wing politics.Neighbors described DePape as a drug addict with left-wing politics.Eric Risberg/AP

The article, which carried the headline, “Need is great on Thanksgiving Day in the East Bay,” described Taub, Pape, and their three children eating Thanksgiving dinner with the homeless. Taub told the reporter that they were there for the community, not because they couldn’t afford to eat at home.

Taub was in the news again five years later when she, then 44, married a 20-year-old man, Jamyz Smith, naked, at City Hall in San Francisco. A photo in the December 16, 2013, edition of The San Francisco Chronicle shows DePape, Taub, Smith, and the three children huddled under a blanket watching television together. The caption describes DePape as “a family friend.” As in The Oakland Tribune article, the focus was on Taub, with no quotes from DePape.

Ryan La Coste, who lives in an apartment directly behind the Taub-DePape house, said that the day after Taub’s wedding to Smith, “There was a huge fight. The guy [Smith] that she married got locked up. And so Taub married somebody else. My understanding was that David [DePape] was the best man to her husband at the wedding.”

The episode was typical of the chaos that swirled around DePape during the years leading up to his alleged attack on Paul Pelosi.
